Lompoc Museum’s Centeno Gallery is presenting a new exhibit, “Around Town and Beyond,” opening with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, and running through Sunday, Jan. 6.

The exhibit features 30 paintings by local artist Sylvia Cummings Kokatnur, including scenes from around Lompoc, both landscapes and cityscapes.

Kokatnur studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. After graduation, she was employed as a colorist and designer at Waverly’s Manhattan studio, where designs were created for its handprint (screenprint) drapery division.

She is a signature member of the Garden State Watercolor Society and the New Jersey Water Color Society. Many of her paintings are in corporate and private collections. Her awards include a Best in Show and the Winsor Newton award for excellence in watercolor.

Although transparent watercolor is her preferred medium, the artist has most recently been painting with acrylics on canvas. This exhibit includes works in both media.

Kokatnur moved with her husband to Lompoc from Belle Mead, N.J., in 2001.

The Lompoc Museum is at 200 South H Street, Lompoc. Museum Hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
