Amalia R. "Nellie" Zamora

Amalia R. “Nellie” Zamora, 94 years young of Lompoc, CA joined her late husband, Felix, on Tuesday, January 30, 2018. She was residing at Mission Terrace Convalescent Hospital, Santa Barbara for the final three months of her life. Nellie always dreamed of living in Santa Barbara and Mission Terrace provided her the opportunity to be cared for by a very professional team of nurses, doctors and staff. Born July 10, 1923 in Puerto Rico, she moved to live with her sister in New York City at the age of 10. As a young adult, she worked at the original Macy's (NYC) and was always thrilled watching the annual Macy's parades.

Nellie is survived by her sister, Lucy Rivera (Los Angeles, CA), her daughter, Carmen Zamora (Santa Maria, CA) and numerous nieces and nephews in Florida, New Mexico, Texas, California and Puerto Rico. Nellie fell in love with Felix Zamora, an airman in the U.S. Air Force, and together they lived in Spain, Thailand, Florida, New Mexico and California. In the mid-1980's they moved to Lompoc, CA. She worked at Vandenberg AFB holding a variety of positions. Nellie was presented the honor and recognition of a Missileer Emeritus for her outstanding participation in the activities of the 4315th Combat Crew Training Squadron, for enthusiastically supporting its mission, and for helping to maintain its morale. She was named an Honorary Graduate, Magna Cum Laude, of the 4315th School of Misselery.

Nellie and Felix were actively involved with Special Olympics, supporting and coaching their daughter and other Special Olympians in their many competitions throughout California. In 2003 they were recognized for 25 years of outstanding service to the Northern Santa Barbara County Special Olympics Program. On March 20, 2004, The Council of the City of Lompoc presented Nellie with Resolution No. 5146(04) honoring her for her service to the Lompoc Community, namely, Special Olympics.

A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Monday, February 12, 2018, 11:00 am at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 3495 Rucker Road, Lompoc, CA 93436 with a private reception for immediate family and friends. A private interment will be held at a later date.
