Captain (USN Retired) Edward Albert Williams

Captain (USN Retired) Edward Albert Williams, 93, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2014 at the Comprehensive Care Center (CCC) in Lompoc, California. "Captain Ed" served with distinction in the US Navy for 32 years. He was born in Coronado, California on October 1, 1920 to Albert Gale and Anna Held Williams. While in high school he was a popular cheerleader and had many friends. "Eddie" joined the Navy as a sailor in 1940 but became a midshipman in 1943. The Captain saw three conflicts during his career - World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. He was the last surviving captain of the USS Begor and also commanded the USS Braine. He graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Economics and completed advanced training through the Navy and was an Anti Submarine Warfare Expert. His duty stations included the ASW school in San Diego as well as Hawaii more than once. He had a love affair with music, the ocean and the laid back beach style that offset his demanding Naval responsibilities. His last duty was as Chief of Staff for the Anti Submarine Warfare Pacific Forces stationed at Ford Island in Honolulu. Captain Williams earned many citations and medals including the Legion of Merit Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor to name a few. Following his retirement from the service he worked as a Defense Contractor in Camarillo, California. After that, he and his wife Connie lived in Mesquite, Texas near family. As a boy he became enamored with stamps and collected them throughout his life. Ed was a ham radio operator and enjoyed chatting with friends around the world.

Edward is preceded in death by his loving wife of 37 years, Hazel "Connie" Marie Williams. He is survived by five children: Jo Lynette Messler (David) of Brandon, Mississippi; Thomas Williams (Lynn) of Santa Ana; Leta Finch (Bill Ryerson) of Shelburne, Vermont; Brett Williams of Los Angeles; and Susan McDermott (Michael) of Lompoc.
