James 'Jay' Blessing, 87, passed away Sunday, October 1 in Yorktown, VA. Jay was born in Illinois to Holly and Myrtle Blessing. After graduating from Lake Forest College, he was commissioned into the US Air Force. He was a bomber pilot with more than 28 years of active service including assignments in Texas, Ohio, Spain, California and Thailand. Jay retired as a Lt Col and settled in Lompoc, California, near Vandenberg AFB. He and his wife, Beverly, made Lompoc their home for more than 40 years and enjoyed the friendship of wonderful neighbors and golfing buddies. His passions were gardening, bird and squirrel watching, tinkering, and playing golf which he was able to do until this past May. Only 6 weeks ago Jay moved to the Crossings in Yorktown to be nearer to his son.
Jay was preceded in death by his parents, older brother, Bob, and his wife of 60 years, Beverly. He is survived by his brother, Bill Blessing (Betty) and sister Linda Xanthos (Bill), his four children and their spouses: Vicki Yort (Chuck); Cindy Riedi (Martin); Bart Blessing (Marta); and Jeff Blessing (Lisa), as well as his 12 grandchildren: Blake, Scott, Anne, Catherine, Lani, Holly, Trace, James, Judd, Tanner, Sage and Bailey.
The family would like to thank the remarkable staff and residents at the Crossings for welcoming Jay to Virginia and caring for him with love these past few weeks. Also our sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff and nurses at Mary Immaculate Hospital along with his physicians Dr. Brian McCormick, Dr. Brendan McConnell, and Dr. Lisa Coleman for their wise counsel and immeasurable kindness.
