Robert William Kennedy Sr., 76, of Lompoc passed away on Thursday November 2, 2017 at Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria surrounded by his loving family.
Graveside services will be held at 9:30am on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at the Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery, 600 South C Street. The Lompoc-Santa Ynez Masonic Lodge No. 262 will preside followed by military honors rendered by the Vandenberg Air Force Base Honor Guard. Memorial services in his honor will follow at 11:30am at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 2800 Harris Grade Road, with Rev. Michael Cunningham officiating.
Robert was born in Brooklyn, New York to Ernest and Helen Kennedy on February 8, 1941. He graduated from Livingston High School in New Jersey in 1960. He married Beverly Paton on February 18, 1962, also in Livingston. Robert was an “in country” Vietnam War veteran with the United States Air Force. He later went on to work for General Electric for 10 years. Robert's involvement with community activities included Lompoc Youth Football, Lompoc Little League and Lompoc Babe Ruth at which time he coached his boys. He also served as President of the Lompoc High School Booster Club where his children attended.
Robert received an award for his devotion to the high standards of education.
He was a 25 plus year member of the Lompoc-Santa Ynez Masonic Lodge No. 262 and served as Master in 1990 and later as secretary for 12 years. In 2008, he received the Hiram award which is the highest award a California Mason can receive. He also served as president of the Lompoc Shrine Club and belonged to the Al Malaikah Shrine Temple. Robert proudly served as organist for the Lompoc Elks Lodge #2274 and was a member there for 43 years. For his honorable service and as a veteran, he belonged to the “Bill” Proud American Legion Post 211. An avid camper, Robert was a member of camping clubs Space Travelers, Elks, Al Malaikah Shrine and the Discovery Club. Robert was currently serving as chairman of the Senior Commission and member of the park maintenance and city pool assessment oversight committee.
He is survived by his wife Beverly, his children; Bobby Kennedy, Debbie (Dan) Rainwater, Scott Kennedy, his grandchildren; Joshua Rainwater, Tristan Kennedy, Victoria Quails (Jason), Ciera Thompson (Todd), Adriana Pelters (Jordan), Haylee Kennedy and Tyler Rainwater, great grandchildren; Harper and Presley Quails, Axylle Pelters, Hartlee and Hayden Thompson and sister Leah Olsson.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Helen Kennedy.
In lieu of flowers and because Bob loved his music and musical theater family, donations may be made in his name to Lompoc High School Drama, c/o Sarah Barthel, 515 W. College Ave, Lompoc.
