Roberta 'Bobby' Jean Arnold died on January 16, 2018 at the age of 90 after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Arnold, in 1990. Bobby, John, and her young family, settled in Lompoc in 1960 where they raised their four children, Deborah, Glen, Richard, and David After her children grew and left home, Bobby became a Teacher's Aide for Fillmore Elementary School retiring twenty years later. Bobby relished her position of aiding the teachers in their important jobs of preparing young children's minds for the future, as well as helping build their characters. Bobby loved to laugh, so she and her workmates found great enjoyment in their day to day work with the students. Later in life, Bobby's dear companion, Jack Barros, was amazed that when they traveled about, so many of her former students knew her and would go out of their way to say hello.
Retirement brought new adventures for Bobby along with her host of loyal friends. Trips to Las Vegas, Laughlin, Nevada, San Francisco, and Los Angeles where she saw musicals and theatrical shows which were her favorites. The trip of her lifetime was touring Italy with her sister-in-law, Ginny Swarts, and two close friends, Winnie, and Nancy. Lifelong involvement in the Lompoc community included Bowling Leagues, assisting in Scouting, and Little League Baseball programs. She also served as treasurer of her women's financial investment club. Bobby attended the First Presbyterian Church in Lompoc for over fifty years. During her retirement years she exercised with numerous walking partners who swore she never went anywhere slowly. The twinkle in her eye and her ability to laugh at herself attracted others to her and remained with her until the end.
Bobby is survived by her children, six grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. More than anything Bobby loved to hear about the educational, professional, and creative lives of her grandchildren. She was their biggest cheerleader.
There will be a private memorial in April near the Pacific Ocean beach that Bobby so loved. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bobby's name can be made to the Hospice of Santa Cruz County organization at 940 Disc Dr., Scotts Valley, CA 95066, who provided compassionate care at the end of her life.
