Sethli Montes, a seventh-grade student at Vandenberg Middle School, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Vandenberg Village Lions Club.

Montes’ poster was among more than 450,000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere.

The poster was selected for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “The Future of Peace.”

Montes’ poster will advance to the Lions District 4-A3 (tri-counties) for the next level of competition.

Lion Steve Straight, local contest chairman, said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students who were under the direction of Vice Principal Christine Nagel.

Sethli, her family and Vandenberg Middle School staff members were guests at the Vandenberg Village Lions Club dinner meeting Feb. 21.
