Steve Heuring, president of the Vandenberg Village Association (VVA), was the guest speaker at Friday morning's meeting of the Vandenberg Village Rotary Club.

Heuring discussed the Vandenberg Village Park and Playground Coalition project.

A long-term goal of the VVA has been to build a small playground, specifically for 1- to 6-year-olds, an area referred to as a “tot lot.” But, finding a small piece of property that was centrally located here in Vandenberg Village proved to be elusive, Heuring said.

In 2013, the VVA became aware that the Alexander property, located between the Vandenberg Village Shopping Center and CoastHills Credit Union, was for sale. Subsequently, the Reid Alexander Family trust donated 1.5 acres to Santa Barbara County and in turn to the residents of Vandenberg Village for the purpose of building a park and playground, he said.

Before the donation would be accepted by the county, assurances were needed that residents would step up to fund the construction, Heuring said. To facilitate this effort, the VVA reached out to community organizations (Village Lions, Village Rotary Club, Village Lions and others) to form the Vandenberg Village Park and Playground Coalition.

The park is now in the design phase, he added, showing a concept drawing of what the park and playground would look like when completed.

The initial fundraising effort of $75,000 is to cover the cost of site preparation, additional landscape design, engineering and biological services, Heuring continued.

"We are working on grant applications from various organizations, but it is highly unlikely that those will cover the full cost of building our park and playground.

"Your generous donation is absolutely imperative to ensure the successful completion of this new addition to our community. Donations will go directly to the cost of construction, playground equipment and park amenities."

He added, "The park will accommodate the needs of all residents -- benefiting the young and old residents alike."
