Elks Lodge to host Boy Scout open house

A Lompoc-area Boy Scout troop will hold an open house at 7 p.m. Monday at the Lompoc Elks Lodge, 905 E. Ocean Ave.

Families will be able to get information and/or register for Boys Scouts at the event. Boy Scouting is open to young men ages 11 through 18. The troop is looking for Scouts to hike and trek in New Mexico next summer.

Raffles to benefit Lompoc MLK Day celebration

The organizing committee for Lompoc’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration is selling raffle tickets to raise funds for next year’s event, scheduled for Jan. 15 at El Camino Community Center.

Among the items being raffled off are a 55-inch TV ($5 for a ticket or $12 for three tickets), a gift basket valued at more than $400 ($2 per ticket or $5 for three tickets) and an Atari gaming system ($1 for two tickets or $5 for 12 tickets). Tickets are available at the Lompoc Farmers Market.

City looking to fill vacancies on commissions

The Lompoc City Council is accepting applications to fill vacancies for 16 open positions on city commissions, a committee and a board.

Positions are available for the Airport Commission, Beautification Commission, Human Services Commission, Library Commission, Mobilehome Rent Stabilization Board, Oversight Committee for Park Maintenance and Pool Assessment, Youth Commission and Utility Commission.

Registration open for Valley of Flowers run

The Lompoc Valley Distance Club is accepting registration for the 41st annual Valley of Flowers Half Marathon and 5K, scheduled for Sept. 16 at La Purisima Mission.

Entry fees are $60 for the half-marathon and $30 for the 5K for those who register early. Race-day registration is $70 for half marathon and $30 for the 5K. The entry fee includes refreshments, entry into La Purisima State Park and a finisher’s medal for all participants. The event benefits the Nancy Perry Memorial Scholarship Fund, through which the distance club awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors.

Youth basketball registration opens Sept. 5

Registration for the Lompoc Recreation Division’s girls and boys youth basketball leagues will begin Sept. 5.

The leagues are open to boys and girls ages 4 years old through eighth grade. The leagues emphasize learning rather than competition, with participants being taught the basic fundamentals of basketball. Each child receives a T-shirt and an award at the end of the season.

The leagues will begin play Oct. 30 and continue into February. The cost for early registration, running Sept. 5 through 22, is $90 for Lompoc residents and $108 for nonresidents. Late registration, from Sept. 23 through 30, will be $100 for Lompoc residents and $120 for nonresidents.
