Host families sought for exchange students

Cultural Homestay International is seeking local residents and/or families to host high school exchange students from China this summer and show the students authentic American culture.

The students will be in Lompoc from July 26 through Aug. 9. Each of the students has had several years of classroom English and each will have full insurance. The students will be in class during the day, and hosts aren't expected to provide spending money or supplies for the students.

Military families invited to back-to-school giveaway

Operation Homefront, a veteran and military family support organization, is encouraging local families with active-duty military personnel to register to receive free backpacks and back-to-school supplies for their children from the Operation Homefront Back-to-School Brigade.

Registration for the giveaway is available online at The deadline to register is Aug. 2. Two hundred backpacks and accompanying school supplies will be distributed at the Back-to-School Brigade event, which will be held Aug. 4 at Vandenberg Air Force Base.

Additionally, shoppers may purchase and donate school supplies to the Back-to-School Brigade at any Dollar Tree store through Aug. 10. This is the ninth year that Dollar Tree has partnered with Operation Homefront to provide school supplies to military children, according to organizers.

Raffles to benefit Lompoc MLK Day celebration

The organizing committee for Lompoc’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration is selling raffle tickets to raise funds for next year’s event, scheduled for Jan. 15 at El Camino Community Center.

Among the items being raffled off are a 55-inch TV ($5 for a ticket or $12 for three tickets), a gift basket valued at more than $400 ($2 per ticket or $5 for three tickets) and an Atari gaming system ($1 for two tickets or $5 for 12 tickets). Tickets are available at the Lompoc Farmers Market.

Information booths sought for Mexican celebration

El Concilio de Lompoc, which will sponsor its 40th annual Mexican Independence Celebration on Sept. 10 at Ryon Park, is accepting applications from any club or group that would like to set up an information booth during the celebration.

Lompoc Library offering movies on Mondays

The Lompoc Public Library, located at 501 E. North Ave., is offering free movie screenings at 2 p.m. Mondays in the Grossman Gallery. 

A different feature film will be shown each week and popcorn will be provided. Anyone looking for a fun way to fill an afternoon is invited to attend. All films are licensed for viewing under Movie Licensing USA.
