Schools to close for winter recess

Year-round Lompoc Unified School District campuses — La Honda and Miguelito elementary schools — will be closed for winter recess from Monday through Friday, Jan. 8, and will reopen Monday, Jan. 11.

The district offices will be closed from Wednesday, Dec. 23, through Friday, Jan. 1, and will reopen Monday, Jan. 4.

Holiday home tour and tea set for today

The Lompoc Hospital Foundation will hold the Holiday Home Tour and Candlelight Tea from noon to 5 p.m. today, inside Ocean’s Seven Cafe at Lompoc Valley Medical Center, 1515 E. Ocean Ave. Tickets are still available for $25 per person, at CVS Pharmacy and at the door.

All proceeds benefit the Lompoc Valley Medical Center’s new hospital building.

Iraq and Afghanistan vet returns home

Marine Sgt. Samuel S. Garcia is scheduled to return to his family in Lompoc today, for a welcome-home celebration.

Garcia, having previously completed two deployments to Iraq, has just completed his third deployment, this time in Afghanistan.

Charter school to hold info meeting

The Academy of Classical Education, the new charter school program, will host an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the Grossman Gallery, 501 E. North Ave. This meeting will be held to discuss the program and invite parents to enroll their students into the program.

Parenting classes offered at Adult Ed

Lompoc Unified Adult Education will offer a series of parenting classes and professional counseling from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, in Room 10, at 320 North J St. Each class is $1 and child care is free.

The next class in the series is titled, “Holiday Stress,” offered Dec. 16.

Fundraiser drawing to be held at library

The Friends of the Library will host a fundraiser drawing for 12 uniquely decorated tabletop Christmas trees on display at the Lompoc Library.

The Village and Buellton libraries will have one tree to raffle. The drawing will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the library, 501 E. North Ave. Tickets are $1 each and are available at the Libraries. Ticket holders do not need to be present to win.

All proceeds go toward library improvements.

Foundation selling cookbook

The Lompoc Firefighters Foundation is selling the second edition of “Lompoc Firehouse Favorites,” a compilation of recipes local firefighters enjoy.

Copies are on sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Fire Station 1 on South G St. All proceeds from sales will be used to purchase equipment for the Lompoc City Fire Department.

Hanukkah to be celebrated

The Vandenberg-Lompoc Jewish Community at Vandenberg Air Force Base Chapel One will celebrate Hanukkah on the eighth day, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18. A dairy-parve potluck dinner will be held, anyone wishing to help with the dinner should arrive at 5:30 p.m. This celebration is free and open to the public.

Holiday food drive set for foodbank

White Lotus Yoga Center will host a holiday food drive for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County through Friday. Donated items can be dropped off at 701 E. North Ave., Suite F.

Items needed are peanut butter, jelly, canned meats, cereal, rice, beans, pasta, canned fruit, canned vegetables, soups and other non-perishable items.

Festival parade planning begins

The Lompoc Valley Festival Association has begun planning for the 2010 Flower Festival Parade. This will be the Festival Association’s 58th Flower Festival. The theme will be “Carousel of Summer.”

Any organization, church, group or individual interested in showcasing a float in the parade or has ideas about floats, building, designing or promoting, is asked to call the Lompoc Valley Festival Association at 735-8511.
