An unknown person or group of people allegedly fired a BB or pellet gun at an occupied Lompoc school bus Thursday afternoon, according to Lompoc Unified School District officials.

The incident is alleged to have occurred around 2:49 p.m. The district reported that at least one shot shattered, but did not penetrate, a bus window. No students were reportedly injured.

The bus was carrying about 20 to 30 Cabrillo High School students, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office, and was heading northbound on Rucker Road from Burton Mesa Road when the incident occurred.

“The driver immediately drove the bus and students a short distance and out of harm’s way before stopping the bus and summoning district administration,” according to an LUSD release. “In turn, law enforcement was immediately contacted and responded promptly.”

LUSD reported that one student, who lived in the immediate area, was released to walk home, while 12 students were safely transported to Los Berros Elementary School and 13 other students were released to their parents/guardians.

Students were interviewed by law enforcement about the incident, which continues to be under investigation by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, according to LUSD.

“We thank those LUSD Transportation Department employees who acted calmly and kept the safety of our students foremost in their decision making process,” the LUSD release said. “We also wish to thank our partners at the Santa Barbara (County) Sheriff’s Office, Lompoc Police Department and California Highway Patrol for their quick response.”

On Wednesday, law enforcement was called after a “suspicious object” was discovered on an LUSD bus that was not transporting students at the time. That object was ultimately determined to be harmless.
