A woman was arrested at a Santa Maria courthouse security checkpoint with a loaded semi-automatic handgun in her purse, a spokeswoman for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.

Spokeswoman Kelly Hoover said it was unclear whether 29-year-old Nicole Grandy-Smith knew the gun was in her purse when she was stopped at the checkpoint on Tuesday.

The weapon was seized, and Grandy-Smith was arrested on misdemeanor charges of possessing a concealed firearm and was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail..

The case has been forwarded to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether to prosecute.
