A 12-year-old girl was killed Sunday when the driver of a vehicle southbound on Highway 101, south of Highway 154 near Buellton, lost control in heavy rain and rolled the vehicle into the center median.
Erasmo Vargas, 35, of Encino, was driving the 2003 Lincoln Navigator at about 75 mph, according to the California Highway Patrol, when the single-vehicle crash occurred.
The girl, also of Encino, was ejected into the northbound fast lane and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Four other passengers, all from Encino, were in the vehicle. Alma Rosa Vargas, 37, reported minor pain after the crash, while three children aged 7, and two 4-year-olds, were not injured.
The fast lane of northbound Highway 101 was closed for about an hour as a result of the crash.
The crash is under investigation, but neither drugs nor alcohol are considered to be a factor, according to the CHP.
