A Lompoc man was arrested by California Highway Patrol officers on Monday after allegedly shooting another driver in the face with a BB gun while traveling on Highway 101 near Santa Barbara.

Erick Morales, 27, was arrested at his Lompoc home on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. Monday when 34-year-old Elises Lugo, of Oxnard, was driving southbound on Highway 101 near Carrillo Street in Santa Barbara. A Nissan Sentra allegedly made an unsafe lane change directly ahead of Lugo's van, according to the CHP.

After following the Sentra for a short distance, Lugo began to pass the vehicle, which is when Lugo was allegedly shot with a BB handgun.

One of Lugo’s passengers recorded the incident on a cellphone, according to officials. That video was used to capture the license plate, which officers later used to determine that the Sentra was being driven by Morales.

Morales reportedly continued driving southbound after the shooting, while Lugo exited the freeway. Lugo suffered minor injuries, the CHP reported.
