The Lompoc Police Department is investigating a death that apparently took place near a homeless encampment in the riverbed near the North H Street bridge, officials announced Tuesday afternoon.

Lompoc Police officers were first alerted to the death when a man went to the Circle K store at the corner of Central Avenue and North H Street and told a clerk at the store that there was a dead body in the riverbed near a homeless camp, police said.

“LPD officers responded to the store, but the male who had reported the body to the clerk had left before their arrival,” Lompoc Police Sgt. Kevin Martin reported. “Officers began searching the area described by the unknown male and were able to locate a homeless camp and a person who took them to the body.”

Detectives examined the body and discovered no visible signs of trauma, according to Lompoc Police. The Santa Barbara County Coroner's Office responded and took possession of the body, police said.
