Foster care for our future

Every May we recognize Foster Care Awareness Month, and each year, hundreds of children in Santa Barbara County enter the foster care system, through no fault of their own.

Year after year, we rally to raise awareness of the plight of abused and neglected children in the foster care system and the need to support them. Our work sometimes feels like an uphill battle, yet we are energized when we hear stories about a teen who has graduated from high school, a child who has been adopted and has a new forever family, or about a child who is able to successfully reunite with their parents.

These successes happen when caring adults are in the child’s life, a supportive team that often includes a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer.

CASA of Santa Barbara County and the network of California CASA programs train members of our community to become CASA volunteers. We then match them with a child in foster care, and the advocate works with other members of the team — the child’s attorney, social worker, teacher, therapist — to determine resources needed and advocate for the child’s best interest to ensure resources are secured.

We ask our community — don’t let this Foster Care Awareness Month go unnoticed. Volunteer, refer friends or make a donation to help us serve more children in need.

Trump just being Trump

Trump is real. He is straight-forward. He is what he has always been.

Put in elegant terms, Trump is an existential pragmatist. Put another way, honest to the point of rudeness.

Compelled by character, wit and intelligence, Trump is and will always be at risk in the sincere belief of doing the right thing.

Those chastising him in the media have never had the responsibility of doing. They exist only as critics based on the arrogance of their speculative opinions.

A captain of a ship in a ferocious storm will take drastic means to save his ship, especially in days of old such as experienced by many who sailed throughout the world depending of weather and wind in frail wooden vessels. So be it with Trump. That is why he is now president.

If Trump fails it will not be because of his doings. It will be because of a growing electorate that ignores reality, that embraces liberal moral ideas, that see in anarchy the freedom that, in fact, chains them to wrong thinking of life and politics.

Those who wish to bring him down should be held to account — the media in collaboration with the obstructionism of Democrats.
