What's wrong with America?
Over 2 million Americans are addicted opioid users. Millions more are using pot and other mind-altering drugs.
The question we should be asking is, why do so many Americans need to escape reality?
Who are these people, and what is so terribly wrong in their daily lives?
Eastin strong education issues for California
About three weeks ago I attended an event that featured a candidate for governor of California named Delaine Eastin who used to be the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Going to this event I wasn’t sure what to make of Eastin. She’s running to fill the seat of Gov. Jerry Brown and is in a crowded primary featuring many Democratic opponents including the former mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa and current Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom. A recent updated newspaper article showed that Eastin has raised the least amount of money compared to her Democratic operatives.
When opening up her speech to the audience, she discussed that she got into this race because she feels our democracy is in trouble and that we have a lack of participation in civil society as well as a lack of faith in government.
Democracy comes from two Greek words “Demos” and “Kratos” essentially meaning “Government by the People.” As she was going through her speech I was persuaded by her knowledge and her passion that she had especially for issues regarding education; having tuition-free college to lower the burden on students and implementing universal “Pre-K” for hard working parents.
I found it quite astonishing that she has visited all of California’s 58 counties, stopping at events and sharing her message about why she would be the right person to lead California. Despite the odds and the money going against her, she is someone who I feel could really make a dent, especially with the “top-two” primary system that we have.
When the time comes to vote on June 5, if issues such as reforming our public school system and helping to lower the cost of education for college students like me, then Delaine Eastin is your candidate!
