SAN BERNARDINO — Hancock College men's basketball team is into the state tournament after handing San Bernardino Valley College its first home loss of the year.
Down 77-72 with 48 seconds left in the first overtime, the Bulldogs forced a second extra period and won a 91-90 stunner in a Southern California Regional Final at SBVC Saturday night.
Sophomore Shane Carney hit a layup in the closing seconds of the first overtime to force the second overtime and then scored six points in the second OT to help Hancock win.
The game was knotted at 67-all after regulation.
The second-seeded Wolverines (27-5) were 10-0 at home and had won 14 straight going into this regional final. The 10th-ranked Bulldogs (23-9) forged a 90-85 lead early in the second overtime and hung on for their second overtime win in the regional. Hancock won 70-67 at No. 7 Fullerton in the second round after getting a first-round bye.
Shane Carney poured in 32 points for the Bulldogs, and Spirit Ricks had 17. Davis Davis, with 11 points and nine rebounds, was a rebound shy of a double-double.
Kevin McNeal scored a game-high 33 points for the Wolverines and Kendall Lauderdale added 21. Tuele WIlliams added 10.
Hancock did enough on offense against a team that had given up an average of 52.3 points a game going in to get the win.
The Bulldogs trailed 38-33 in the first minute of the second half of regulation. They forged ahead 45-40 at the 14:20 mark, kept the lead most of the rest of the second half but eventually slipped behind 67-66 with 1:17 left before getting the game into overtime.
The Bulldogs, now one of the final four teams in the Southern Regional, advance to next week’s State Championship Tournament at Ventura College. Also advancing from the south: No. 5 Cerritos (26-5) after defeating Santiago Canyon 95-75; No. 1 San Diego City (30-2) after topping Ventura 91-84; and No. 6 Orange Coast, an 80-77 winner at No. 3 Citrus.
The final-four teams from the south will be joined in the Elite Eight by the north’s final-four teams, Fresno, Santa Rosa, College of the Sequoias and San Francisco. The next round of games will take place on Friday, March 9. Games will take place at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. The Final Four will take place on Saturday, March 10, and the state championship game on Sunday, March 11.
The Bulldogs punched their first ticket to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship Tournament since 1974, when the Bulldogs won the state championship.
Hancock plays San Francisco Friday at 7 p.m.
