The Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table completed it’s weekly meetings on May 13, but there are still student-athletes competing in several spring sports.
This year, the Round Table awards committee decided to present Athlete of the Week awards even on the weeks when there there were no luncheons, because competition continued those weeks. So for one more time, the Round Table presents its final weekly awards.
St. Joseph pole vaulter Joseph Castellanos is a CIF champion. The junior won the Division 4 pole vault championship at the CIF Southern Section Track & Field Championships, held at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday, and in the process cleared a personal best and also set the school record of 14 feet, six inches.
With the vault, Castellanos led the Knights to a 1-2-4 finish in the pole vault and helped the Knights finish fourth overall in the team standings.
For his record breaking performance, Castellanos was named the final male Athlete of the Week for the school year of 2012-13.
And continuing an amazing season, Righetti High softball pitcher Katie Chenault began the playoffs with a bang — not at the plate, but in the pitcher’s circle.
The senior hurler led Righetti to a 10--0 first round win over La Salle (Pasadena) last Thursday.
Chenault pitched a no-hitter — her third of the season — and struck out 13 batters as the Warriors rolled into the second round.
Chenault was one walk away from a perfect game as the Warriors improved to 23-7 on the season.
Righetti will travel to Grand Terrace this afternoon to play Grand Terrace High (20-6), the second place team from the Sunset League.
The annual NSBCART awards banquet and Hall of Fame induction dinner will be held Wednesday, May 22, at the Santa maria Elks Lodge.
Weekly meetings will resume in September.
