Powered by a double-double from Karly Beyers and a career-high 24 points from Grace Rosa, the Hancock College women’s basketball team defeated Las Positas 61-48 to earn third place at Cuesta College’s 34th annual Phillips 66 Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldogs went 2-1 during the three-day tournament to improve to 4-3.

Hancock led from start to finish. The Bulldogs led 14-8 after the first quarter and 32-25 at halftime. Las Positas climbed to within four points with about three minutes to go when Hancock responded with a run of its run. Taylor Lee-Hammer buried a three-point bucket as the shot clock expired. The sophomore guard followed it up with a steal and fed Beyers for a bucket to push the lead back up to nine.

Beyers finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for her second double-double of the season. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Rosa made 11 of her 15 shots and both of her free throws to finish with a career-best 24 points. The sophomore center pulled down seven rebounds, two on the offensive end of the court.

Lee-Hammer finished with seven points, four rebounds and five assists. Anamarie Fruge chipped in four assists, two steals and four points. Freshman Brianna Rubalcaba came off the bench to add six points, three rebounds and two steals.

Hancock will host its own tournament next week. The 20th annual Lady Bulldog Classic runs from Thursday, Dec. 7, through Saturday, Dec. 9.

Girls Basketball

Spartans win two

The Orcutt Academy Spartans won two games Saturday to finish 4-0 at the Bishop Diego Bird Cage Classic Tournament.

The Spartans beat Coast Union 64-34 in Saturday’s first game.

Sophomore Vanessa Salazar led the way with 19 points and 5 steals.

Mariah Lopez had another productive game with 10 points and 7 boards.

The Spartans then wrapped up the tournament with a 60-37 victory over Nordhoff.

Marie Jimenez led Orcutt with 16 points, Salazar added 15 and was named to the All-Tournament team. The Spartans are now 4-1 on the season.

VCA 47, Midland 19

The Valley Christian Academy Lions rolled to a 47-19 victory over Los Olivos' Midland Oaks Saturday afternoon in a non-league game in Santa Maria.

Shy Kendrick led the way, scoring 21 points, which included two 3-point field goals, and 10 rebounds.

Savannah Trenkle was also big on the boards, pulling down nine rebounds while scoring two points.

Grace Cose and Ciera Sallee each added six points, Mayley DiBernardi and Shantelle Knutson each scored four and Heather Knutson and Dominique Navarrete each scored two.

"We had eight girls who scored tonight, so that was good," said head coach Randy Stanford.

The Lions (1-1) have a week off before hosting Dunn next Saturday.

Santa Barbara 63, Lompoc 43

Lompoc (1-2) closed out the annual Bryan Ayer Classic with a loss to Santa Barbara at Lompoc's Bryan Ayer Courts.

Danielle Morgan led Lompoc with 18 points. Ketara Manzino added seven more.

Santa Barbara's leading scorer was Alondra Jiminez with 22 points.

Piedmont 69, Pioneer Valley 36

Jasmyne Higgins led Piedmont to the win over Pioneer Valley, scoring 15 points at the Bryan Ayer Classic.

Raven Anielski led Pioneer Valley with 10.

Ayer All-Tournament Team

Anielski  was named to the Bryan Ayer Classic All Tournament team along with Morgan, Jiminez, Santa Barbara's Cassandra Gordon and Piedmont's Kristen Seyranian and Ashley Gao.

Morgan scored 56 points in her three tournament games, scoring 16 and 22 points in her first two games to go along with the 18 she put up Saturday.

Mission Oaks 70, Santa Maria 65

Santa Maria’s boys lost a tough game at the Hanford Tournament, falling to Tulare’s Mission Oaks in the championship game.

Kobe Medina led the Saints (2-1) with 19 points, Joey Nevarez added 15, Thomas Segel chipped in 11 and DaJoure Burress added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Medina and Nevarez were selected to the All-Tourney team.

Santa Maria opens the Los Padres League season on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at Cabrillo.

Midland 52, Valley Christian 39

Adam Xie scored 18 points to lead Dunn to a non-league victory at Valley Christian Academy in Santa Maria.

Isak Deming was VCA's leading scorer with 12 points. Jamin Magnus had 10 and Andrew Sparlin eight.

The Lions (0-3) host Dunn next Saturday.

Cross Country

Footlocker West Regionals

WALNUT — St. Joseph High School junior Joe Domingues Jr. was the top local finisher at Saturday’s annual Footlocker West Regional Cross Country Championships at the Mount San Antonio College Course in Walnut.

Domingues finished 133rd in a time of 17:28.9 over the three-mile course in the Seeded Boys Division.

Arroyo Grande Luis Jazo finished in 143rd place in 17:35.2.

San Luis Obispo’s Justin Hatcher finished 202nd and 18:19.2 with Arroyo Grande’s Carter Campbell right behind in 203rd at 18:20.2.

Arroyo Grande’s Cooper Limon finished 46th in 17:34.3 in the Junior Boys Division.
