The Hancock College baseball team has played nine games at its John Osborne Field this season.

The Bulldogs have won all nine.

Hancock starter Nic Cardinal struck out a career-high 11, and the Bulldogs (10-8, 1-0) stayed perfect at home and won their Western State Conference North Division opener by beating Santa Barbara City College 9-5 Tuesday.

The Bulldogs are 9-0 at home. The Vaqueros dropped to 9-9, 0-1 on the season.

Hancock struck for five first-inning runs off SBCC starter Brett Vansant, thanks in part to a third-strike passed ball and an error after Quinntin Perez led off the bottom of the first with a double.

Ismael Hernandez, Reed Odland and Tanner Thompson each hit an RBI single for Hancock in the first.

Jake Shusterich hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second for the eventual winning run.

Cardinal worked eight innings and improved to 4-1. He scattered eight hits and two walks and gave up three runs.

Shusterich finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs, a double and a home run. Perez, Cordell Bowie, Ismael Hernandez and Daniel Curiel all went 2-for-5 for the Bulldogs. Bowie, Hernandez, Odland and Thompson all drove in a Hancock run.

Jake Holton and Shane Hersh had three hits apiece for SBCC. Mitch Sancier had two hits, including a two-run home run off Cardinal who struck out at least one batter in every inning he pitched.

Nipomo 13, Morro Bay 2

Ricardo Rodriguez went 3-for-3 with five RBIs as the Titans (1-3, 1-1) beat Morro Bay at home to square their Los Padres League record.

Ricky Iniquez went 3-for-5 for the Titans, with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Isaiah Renteria was 2-for-3, with four runs scored for Nipomo.

Nipomo's Chad Shusterich (1-0) pitched six innings and struck out four.

Arroyo Grande 14, Righetti 4     

Michael Atherton swept 6-2, 6-3, 6-0 in singles, and the doubles tandem of Joey Kullman and Isaiah Szbecki didn't lose a game in a three-set doubles sweep as the Eagles (2-0, 1-0) defeated the Warriors in a PAC 8 League match.

Boys golf

Cabrillo 254, Santa Maria 348

Isaiah Cisneros was the medalist with a 44 on the Santa Maria Country Club front nine as the Conquistadores beat the Saints in a Los Padres League match.

Teammates following Cisneros were Sean Melugin (46), Colby Barthel (50), Curren Thomas (52) and Nick MacEachern (62).

Jose Lopez led the Saints with a 67. Teammates Aaron Madrigal (68), Alidio Mendoza, Kobe Pabellan and Raul Montar (all at 71) followed.

Santa Maria coach Jay Cheney said his team from last year graduate last year, and all his players are new to the game.

St. Joseph 480, Paso Robles 484

Medalist Luke Adam shot an even-par 72 at the Santa Maria Country Club, leading the Knights to a narrow PAC 8 League win over the Bearcats in St. Joseph's season opener.

Grant Cena (95), Caleb Rodriguez (98), Henry Adam (104) and Grayson Arnsdorf (111) followed Luke Adam for the Knights.

Nico Delgado led Paso Robles with a 91.


Righetti 3, Morro Bay  0

Chuckie Koertge had 25 assists and five aces to help the Warriors move to 3-0 with a 25-13, 25-21 and 29-27 win at Morro Bay.

Tanner Scott added eight kills and four aces.

Mason Passmore had eight kills and a pair of blocks as Andrew White added six kills and Jairo Grimaldo chipped in six.

The Warriors host Arroyo Grande in their PAC 8 League opener. The match begins at 6 p.m.

“We are looking pretty good and I’m pleased with what I’m seeing,” Righetti coach Charlie Koertge said. “I think we’ll do pretty well this year.”

The coach knows Thursday’s game against Arroyo Grande, the perennial league power, is pivotal.

“That’s always important and it’s always a tough beginning to the season playing the perennial league champ,” Koertge said. “We have our work cut out for us.”
