The Knights ended an 11-year drought Friday night.
A St. Joseph football team hadn't defeated a Ventura County team since 2006. The Knights routed St. Bonaventure 42-12 in a non-league football game played at Ventura College.
The Knights defeated Ojai's Nordhoff in 2006, the last time a St. Joseph team won against any Ventura County team.
Jayden Vargas powered the Knights with 215 yards on 25 carries. Vargas also had two rushing touchdowns.
Dino Maldonado, St. Joseph's senior quarterback who was coming off a four-touchdown performance against rival Righetti, completed 20 of 27 passes for 286 yards with four more touchdowns passes. Maldonado has eight passing touchdowns in his last two games and a rushing score.
Nate Guzman finished the night with eight catches for 127 yards and a 55-yard TD strike from Maldonado. Joseph Miller, who had over 100 yards and two touchdowns last week against Righetti, had four catches for 79 yards and a 60-yard touchdown catch from Maldonado. Mason Biely also caught a touchdown from Maldonado and finished with three catches for 42 yards.
Marc Rubalcaba, a catcher on the Knights' baseball team, had a breakout game. The senior caught a nine-yard touchdown and finished with two catches for 20 yards.
The Knights have a big test in store Friday night: They host Bishop Diego, the top-ranked team in Division 6.
Bishop Diego 45, Nipomo 3
The Titans fell to 0-3 on the season with a lop-sided defeat at home.
The Cardinals built up a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and then tacked on two more touchdowns in the second to take a 28-3 lead into the break. They then added two touchdowns in the third and a field goal in the fourth quarter to move to 3-0.
Bishop Diego plays at St. Joseph Friday night. Nipomo takes on Santa Ynez, which had a bye this week and is 2-0 on the season.
Valley Christian Academy 61, Frazier Mountain 22
The Lions got their first win of the season, dominating the first quarter 42-6 and cruising from there.
The score was 55-6 at halftime.
"We played really well that first quarter," said VCA coach Pete Fortier. "We just had great field position."
Kiernan Quinonez had 11 carries for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Adam Aldana carries the ball 12 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, Aldana pulled the ball away from a Frazier Mountain player and ran it 24 yards for a touchdown. He also had a sack.
Ethan McCoy had seven tackles on defense and Jamin Magness added six. Tim Trenkle kicked a point-after try for the Lions, a rarity for VCA.
"We haven't kicked a PAT in a couple of years so it's good to have a freshman kicker coming through," Fortier said of Trinkle.
Trenton Lane, had 10 carries for 76 yards. He was 3 for 6 for 50 yards passing with a touchdown.
McCoy played some at quarterback as well, and threw a 20-yard TD pass to Lane.
Andrew Sparlin, McCoy and Quinonez also had interceptions on defense. Conner Anderson recovered a fumble.
The Lions are 1-1 and travel to play Alpaugh next Saturday.
