Cabrillo High's girls golf team beat defending Los Padres League champion Nipomo by a narrow two-stroke margin on Tuesday at the Vandenberg Village Country Club.
The Conquistadores combined to score 286 strokes to edge out the Titans' 288 strokes.
It wasn't until the nine-hole competition was over and the scores tabulated that Cabrillo head coach David Schroeder said his golfers knew how close the match had been all afternoon. Despite higher scores than usual from Baylee Gregory (55) and Devan McCune (57), Cabrillo got solid scores from Gabi Delgado (57), Brianna Gonzales (58) and Aubrey Campfield (59) to secure the victory.
"What we did today is what we need to win," Schroeder said. "When we shoot that bad and still eke out a win — when we play a few more rounds hopefully all our scores will go down."
Nipomo's Brooke Cuzick won the individual medal with a score of 48. Nipomo's Carah Frank (55), Karlee Magness (56), Kanani Neel (64) and Brooke Panzardi (65) finished the scoring for the Titans.
"The big thing is they have fun together," Schroeder said. "For them it was a sweet victory because Nipomo crushed everyone last season."
Nipomo lost most of its top scorers from last year and Schroeder said he expects all the league teams are "in the same boat" this season with no one dominant group pulling away.
Nipomo head coach Jim Delaby said because the Titans are in a "developmental year" it's important that the golfers pay attention to detail to improve. He said it was a good sign that Magness and Frank scored personal bests and Cuzick's score was her best in three years at La Purisima.
Lompoc 278, Morro Bay 291
The 278 stroke team score from Lompoc High's girls golf team on Tuesday was a 30-stroke improvement over the group's score last year at La Purisima, said Tom Garrard, head coach of the Braves.
Lompoc's Kendal Martin was the medalist with a score of 47. Rylee Sager (53), Marlene Mendez (58), Danielle Morgan (59) and Destiny Goggins (61) were the other scorers for the Braves.
"We shot lower today at a much tougher course than we shot last week at Chalk Mountain, so I am happy with the improvement," Garrard said.
Lompoc 15, Pioneer Valley 3
The Braves earned their second win of the season in dominant fashion in a home match against Pioneer Valley on Tuesday afternoon.
Lompoc's top doubles duo of Gensis Garza and Edith Elenes swept all three sets by 6-0 scores. Pioneer Valley's Kiana Morales and Amy Guzman won the only singles matches for Pioneer Valley.
Bouquet, Jaeckels Athletes of the Week
St. Joseph seniors Claire Bouquet and Blake Jaeckels are the first Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week for the 2015-16 school year.
Bouquet swept six sets without dropping a game last week as the Knights (1-1) defeated Nipomo 13-5 Tuesday and lost to Orcutt Academy 10-8 Thursday. Both matches were non-league ones.
Jaeckels accounted for 316 yards of total offense as St. Joseph defeated Righetti 42-6 at St. Joseph in the sixth annual Battle for the Shield game Friday night. Jaeckels threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score.
