MOORPARK — The Santa Maria Westside Little League All-Stars played themselves into the championship round Thursday.

Dominic Brito homered twice, and Westside defeated Oxnard-based El Rio 12-2 in the second round of the California Little League Section 1 10-12-year-old Tournament at the Moorpark Little League Complex.

The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Westside was the designated home team. Adan Ruvalcaba ended it with his second RBI single that gave Westside its last run and a 10-run margin.

Westside will play the Goleta Valley South-El Rio winner at 1 p.m. Saturday. If Westside wins, it will win the three-team double elimination tournament and advance to the Southern California State Tournament in Long Beach. If Westside falls, the winner of a 1 p.m. Sunday game will win the Section 1 title.

Omar Torres jump-started Westside with a two-run home run in the first inning Thursday. Westside scored five runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth.

Brito hit a two-run home run in the fourth, and Torres smacked an RBI double. Matt Rivas and Ritchie Robles bolstered Westside's offense in the fourth. They both singled.

Another run scored on an error on a Bo Garcia ground ball.

Brito hit a solo home run in the fifth. Garcia hit a two-run double, and Rivas and Ruvalcaba both had an RBI single.

Brito finished 2-for-2 with the two home runs. Torres and Garcia both wound up 3-for-4.

Robles pitched a six-hit complete game.

The So Cal state tourney will start July 19.

Westside 10, Goleta Valley 9

Westside edged Goleta Valley in the opening game of the tournament.

The District 65 champions roared out to a 10-0 lead, but it was too early in the game for the run-rule to be invoked when Goleta Valley, the District 63 champions, scored nine late runs, coming close to pulling out a huge comeback victory.

As the designated visiting team, Westside was up to bat first, jumping to an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Richie Robles.

Westside increased its lead to 6-0 with a five-run second inning and made it 9-0 in the third after Dominic Brito blasted a three-run home run.

Westside starting pitcher Bo Garcia cruised through three scoreless innings but began to tire in the fourth.

Goleta Valley had a nine-run rally, preventing the 10-run rule from taking effect, when Robles came on in relief and ended the rally.

Omar Torres then took over on the mound, shutting Goleta Valley down the rest of the way to preserve the win.
