Wyatt Marsalek

Marsalek, 17, is a junior from Santa Maria who attends New Tech. He’ll compete in the 400 and 1,500 free. “Wyatt won the 500 free at the CIF Southern Section championships and went to the state meet. Back in March, Wyatt finished sixth in the short course 1,650 (yards) — swimming’s version of the mile,” said Ashmore. “I expect he’ll be very competitive in both the 400 and 1,500.” The four boys have also qualified for the 800 free relay.

SMSC's Marsalek makes final in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS — Members of the Santa Maria Swim Club have been dropping their times all week in Indianapolis at the NCSA Summer Nationals.

What the swimmers haven't done though was make a final.

That changed on Friday.

Wyatt Marsalek broke through for SMSC in the 400-meter freestyle and wound up 23rd overall in the meet.

Marsalek hit a time of 4 minutes, 6.31 seconds to qualify 21st in the prelims. Marsalek swam a 4:08.32 in the final.

The meet is being at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and wraps up on Saturday.

Other highlights for the SMSC members at IUPUI included Izzie Fraire's performance in the 200-meter breaststroke. Fraire moved up from 81st to 39th with a time of 2:44.10.

The top 32 in the preliminaries advance to the finals, meaning Fraire just missed out on making her first final of the meet.

Saray Brown, also competing in the 200 breaststroke, moved up eleven spots, from 72nd to 61st with her performance in the prelims, swimming in 2:47.31.

Marcos Hillje-Enthoven swam in the 100-meter butterfly and qualified for next spring's Junior Nationals with a best time that moved him up from 139th to 99th at 59.14.

Hillje-Enthovehn also hit a lifetime best in the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:12.69.
