A 16-year playoff drought will end Friday night when Santa Maria's football team takes the field against Carpinteria in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 12 playoffs at SMHS. Both teams are 6-4 on the season, though Santa Maria is the Northern League champion, ending a league title drought that started in 1988. The last time the Saints won a playoff game was in 1994, when the 1-9 Saints defeated top-seeded Culver City, 33-29.
