Alfie’s celebrating 40th anniversary
Alfie’s Fish & Chips in Lompoc is celebrating its 40th anniversary this month, and as a “thank you” for customers’ support, through
Dec. 20 every customer will be handed an envelope.
Every envelope will contain a prize — a 10 percent off card for the next visit, one of 40 $10 certificates, the grand prize of a $40 gift certificate or a certificate for a gift basket filled with imported English foods and candies, said co-owner Mike Sewall.
Alfie’s Fish & Chips opened its doors Dec. 20, 1969. Scottish couple Jack and Margaret Clairney planned for Alfie’s to always be a family business, Sewall said.
In the early 1980s, they sold the business to their daughter, Colleen Staffel, who operated it until 2001, when she sold it to Mike and Nellie Sewall and their four children, all of whom have worked there.
Alfie’s started as a franchise in 1969 across the Western United States. In three years, the corporation opened too many stores too fast and went out of business in 1972, Sewall said.
Since then, Alfie’s have all been independently owned and operated. Today, the Lompoc restaurant and the first location in Texas City, Texas, are the only Alfie’s remaining.
Alfie’s at 1036 North H St. in Lompoc is open from 11 a.m. to
9 p.m. daily and includes the British Market, which features imported English candies and treats.
