How did you get into this business?
I grew up in Lindsay, Calif., in the Central Valley. I was going to be a schoolteacher. I took college prep and stuff. Then I won this contest. It was for Olive Queen, Lindsay Ripe Olives. The first prize was a full scholarship to beauty college. That more or less set my path. I've been in business for myself since I was 23. I started very much on a shoestring. I never did get a small business loan. When I started my business in Lompoc 25 years ago, I took out a home equity loan.
What do you like most about owning your own business?
It's the challenge. I'm a type A. And I love people. I like to be around people.

Most challenging is surviving in business in Lompoc for 25 years.
What do you do in your spare time?
I like to travel. We have been to Hawaii, Alaska. We plan a trip coast-to-coast. I enjoy seeing my kids.
