What is your job title?
I am a computer technician.
Would you describe your job?
I maintain computers used by the library employees as well as computers used by library patrons. I also maintain library servers and the local area network.
How long have you had the job?
I have had the job for 12 years.
You have free articles remaining.
How did you get the job?
I had been interested in computers since high school where I started programming. In about 1993 I observed that there was an abundance of programmers and decided to learn computer hardware. I started out repairing my own computer.
When I got out of the Air Force after 20 years, I was able to get work, being adept at both software and hardware. I was working for South Coast Phoenix as a computer technician during the time when mom and pop computer business was winding down.
Another employee, Glenda Smith, had seen that there was an opening at the Lompoc Library and suggested that I apply. My capacity to repair peripherals like printers as well as computers cinched the job for me.
What do you like most about doing your job?
I like the busyness of the job. There is always something interesting to do. My supervisor Molly Gerald creates a good working environment that enables me to want to do a good job.
What do you find most challenging?
I find keeping up with the changes in technology a challenge. Also, the state funding to libraries has been cut drastically. The loss of state funding has had a major impact. This makes it difficult to maintain equipment to meet the needs of library patrons.
What do you do in your spare time?
My girlfriend and I go biking a lot. Also, I play a lot of video games.
