What products and services do you offer?

We offer a variety of shipping, postal and printing services. We package shipments, especially fragile items. Other services include notary, copying, faxing, printing, mailbox rental, shredding, and passport photos. We also sell an assortment of packing supplies, greeting cards, as well as gift items featuring photos from our local area.

Who are your customers?

Our customers are small business and home-based businesses, corporate personnel, military personnel from Vandenberg, and other customers.

How many people do you employ?

I employ two full-time people and just hired a one part-time person. I also work full time.

How long have you been in business?

I purchased this store 17 years ago when it was called Mail Boxes Etc. (MBE).

How did you get into this business?

I worked in Silicon Valley as the marketing communications manager for a video equipment manufacturer, and I managed all their trade shows in the U.S. and abroad. This involved the worldwide shipment of many exhibits and a lot of travel. After a long career in the field of marketing and office management, I was anxious to try something different, something like owning and operating a small business of my own. In 1996, after evaluating a number of franchises, I picked MBE, now the UPS store, because it was perfectly suited to my background.

What do you like most about owning your own business?

I like just about everything. Building relationships with customers and providing solutions to their everyday business needs is such a gratifying experience. Also, being part of such a reputable franchise is extremely rewarding. Even though you own your own business, you also have the franchisor, UPS, helping out with the business development and marketing. It doesn't get much better than that!

What do you find most challenging about owning this business?

Owning and operating a small retail business requires that you wear many hats. There is always a full list of things to do besides helping the customer. However, my staff does a great job at helping customers so I'm usually in my office doing the boring paperwork and bookkeeping.

What do you do in your spare time?

I enjoy playing golf, gardening, and photography. I discovered that the Lompoc Valley and the central coast is a photographer's paradise. I like to take my camera and just explore. I use my photos in Lompoc notecards, prints and calendars which we produce and sell in the store.

Is there anything you would like to add?

When UPS bought Mail Boxes Etc. in 2003 our franchise name changed to The UPS Store. The store will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in the same location this Nov. 1.
