What is your job title?
Describe your job
We service and repair Toyotas and some other makes of vehicles. I run the parts department, looking up and ordering parts. I do estimates on maintenance of vehicles.
How long have you had the job?
You have free articles remaining.
I have worked here since 1979, 33 years.
How did you get the job?
I had my first car when I was 15, a 1962 Chevy Bel Air. You had to have a car to get around. So, I learned how to keep it running. Later, a salesman friend referred me to Jimmy Long, the owner of Toyota at the time. I interviewed and got the job. It was natural for me to get into the automotive field.
What do you like most about doing your job?
Most favored is dealing with people. Because Toyota customers are always happy. I have a lot of longtime customers — 20, 25, 30 years. My boss Jerry Karczewski has been very supportive.
What do you find most challenging?
Staying up with the evolving technologies takes some effort. When I started, cars were basic, few microprocessors. Today computers are in everything, the heater, anti-lock systems on the brakes, etc. However, running the parts and service department comes naturally. Not much fazes me after 33 years.
What do you do in your spare time?
I spend time with my three sons and fiancé. We fish and go camping. I am an usher for the Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara. They host concerts like Cheech and Chong as well as various lectures.
