At noon Wednesday, deputies responded to Play it Again Sports in Goleta after 44-year-old Santa Barbara resident Aaron Derkacz allegedly attempted to sell stolen surfboards to the store. A responding deputy confronted Derkacz during his transaction and learned that the surfboards had been stolen from the back of a parked vehicle Tuesday.
Derkacz was accompanied by Carly Jo Orrison, of Solvang, and Kevin Derrick, 25, of Santa Barbara, who were seated inside a pickup truck parked near the business. Despite Orrison and Derrick repeatedly providing false information to deputies, they soon learned the pickup was allegedly stolen from Santa Maria in December.
Upon searching the truck, deputies found suspected stolen property including computers, cellphones, U.S. mail and credit cards. A "skimming" device, typically used to encode other cards with stolen credit card information, was also recovered.
All three were arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail. Orrison was booked for providing false information to a peace officer and was released Thursday morning. Derkacz was booked for the possession of stolen property with bail set at $20,000.
