On February 22, 2018 the world lost a sweet loving soul when Fred Steger passed away. He was born at Fort Carson, CO on May 20, 1960 and was diagnosed with Downs's syndrome. His parents, Mike and Barbara Steger, as well as their four daughters, included him in every aspect of their life. As part of an Air Force family he lived in many locations. These included: the Air Force Academy, CO; Grayling, MI; Camp Springs, MD; Los Angeles, CA; Vandenberg AFB, Lompoc, CA; and Santa Maria, CA. Fred attended school in many of these locations and graduated from Cabrillo High School. For many years he attended the Vocational Training Center and participated in the Special Olympics.
The center of Fred's life was his family. When meeting someone new the first thing he would proudly say was, “I have four sisters! Linda, Shannon, Nancy, and Julie.” When he was younger Fred was noted for doing many tricks that no one else could master; such as twirling a washcloth on a stick or rolling a slinky down his arm. Fred loved to entertain and he was a master at planning and directing the nephews and nieces in family shows. He also had an uncanny knack for naming someone that reminded him of a TV character or personality. For example he might say “you remind me of Dick Van Dyke” and it would be spot on! Fred was a kind, gentle and loving person. Everyone who knew him loved him. He always asked about your family, or gave a compliment whenever he saw you. One of the things he enjoyed most was serving as the acolyte at church. He knew nearly everyone and would hug each person as he dismissed the communion table. Fred is survived by his father, four sisters, eleven nephews/nieces, and ten grand-nephews/nieces.
The family thanks everyone who was involved in caring for and helping Fred: Daisy Simmons (group home mother for 20 years); Mydor's staff (Fred's home for the last two years); Bethany Lutheran Church (where he served as acolyte); VTC (Lompoc and Santa Maria); Tri-Counties Rep, Debbie Nygren, and many others. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred's memory to any of these organizations and/or Special Olympics. A celebration of life for Fred will be held at 2:00pm on March 10, 2018 at the Elks Lodge, 905 E Ocean Avenue, Lompoc, CA.
