John Hurst, Boy Scout merit badge counselor

John Hurst, Boy Scout merit badge counselor, teaches fire safety in his class. As part of their training, Scouts learn how to properly extinguish a fire.

From Bakersfield to Ventura, over 200 Boy Scouts from the Live Oak District have gathered on the Central Coast to learn valuable skills that will help them as well as those around them through their lives.

Four merit badges of a possible 26 that can be earned by each Scout are being taught at this year’s Merit Badge POW WOW at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 908 Sierra Madre, in Santa Maria.

Some of the classes being offered include welding, taught by Hancock College, plumbing, reptiles, sustainability, space exploration, art and music.

Classes were March 11 and will be held again Saturday.
