STEM Expo award winners

The winners of the 2019 STEM Expo, held May 3 and 4 at Lompoc High School, are shown in a group photo at the end of the event.

The Central Coast Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Expo was held at Lompoc High earlier this month. The 34th annual event's primary sponsor was the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Vandenberg Section, which bills itself as the world's largest technical society dedicated to the global aerospace professional. 

Other contributors included the Endeavour Center, The Quady Foundation,  the Science Applications International Corporation, Information Technology Company, the International System Safety Society’s Central California Chapter, ManTech Systems Engineering and Advanced Technology Group, Aerospace Corporation, Lompoc High School and Lompoc Unified School District.

Third to Sixth Grade Award Winners:

3rd Place, $50 to Sixth Grader from La Honda, “Gene Mystery” – Isabel Lujan, Olivia Guerra, Samantha Gonzales

2nd Place, $75 to Fifth Grader from La Honda, “Aquaponics” – Andrew Rivera, Lovely Lopez, Mia Watkins

1st Place, $100 to Fourth Grader from La Purisima Catholic School, “Which antacid works best with stomach problems” – Ameli Gallardo

Seventh Grade Award Winners:

3rd Place, $50 to Seventh Graders from Vandenberg Middle School, “Comparative analysis of room temperature cured Epoxy?” – Benjamin Barthel

2nd Place, $75 to Seventh Grader Vandenberg Middle School, ”How does the temperature effect the Solar Panel output” – Ava Nasr

1st Place, $100 to Seventh Grader from Vandenberg Middle School, “Variables within building a Girder Bridge” – Landon Dierling
