Volunteers sought for beautification project

The Lompoc Beautification and Appearance Commission is inviting members of the community to participate in a work project, scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 16.

The work will involve enhancing the farmers market parking lot on West Ocean Avenue between I and J streets, including spreading mulch and compost. Those who want to participate in the project are asked to meet in the parking lot at 8 a.m.

Work will continue until the project is complete, according to the commission. Lunch will be provided to volunteers. Participants are asked to bring tools, if possible, such as wheelbarrows, shovels, pitchforks and rakes.

Buddhist Center to offer meditation workshop

The Mahakankala Buddhist Center will offer a meditation workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at the Plaza de Oro building, 701 E. North Ave., Suite F (upstairs, far right).

Keli Vaughan, the center's resident instructor, will teach “The Path of Great Love: Universal Compassion.” There will be two sessions of teaching and guided meditations to help students cultivate attitudes to make their minds peaceful. There will be a break for refreshments between sessions. Everyone is welcome.

Lompoc Pops Orchestra to perform June 18

The Lompoc Pops Orchestra will hold its next concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 18, at the First United Methodist Church, 925 North F St.

Renowned vocalist Alba Franco-Cancel and pianist Matthew Harikian will be the featured soloists. In addition, high school recipients of the Pops scholarships will be announced and acknowledged. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $5 for full-time students of all ages with student ID. Children 12 and younger are admitted free.

Ministry to host youth basketball camp

The Lompoc Valley Christian Men's Ministry will sponsor its 17th annual "Ultimate 3-Pointer" Summer Basketball Camp for children in third through ninth grades from June 25 through 28 at the Trinity Church of the Nazarene gymnasium, 500 E. North Ave.

Awards and prizes will be given out. Registration is $85 per child.

Foursquare Church offering vacation bible school

The Lompoc Foursquare Church Children’s Ministry will host an “IF (Incredible Faith)”-themed summer vacation bible school each Sunday from July 1 through 29 at 125 North C St.

The free school is open to children 4 years old through fifth grade. It will be held during the church’s 9:15 and 10:45 a.m. services. It will include music, games, prizes and hands-on lessons. There will be a prize drawing each Sunday and all children who participate will receive a goody bag on the last day of the school.
