Blood drive to be held at Elks Lodge

The United Blood Services of the Central Coast will hold a blood drive from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Lompoc Elks Lodge, 905 E. Ocean Ave.

Donors must feel well, have eaten prior to donation, weigh at least 110 pounds, be at least 17 years old and have photo identification. Walk-ups are encouraged.

Old Town Market to feature arts, car cruise

Members of the Lompoc community are invited to celebrate “Visual & Performing Arts Night” during the Old Town Market street fair, scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 12, in the 100 block of South H Street.

The event, which is free to attend, will also feature the Lompoc High School Alumni Association's annual Car Cruise. Like it does each week, the celebration is also slated to include an assortment of food and information booths, a bounce house, live music, a farmer's market, and other activities and entertainment.

Families invited to 'Movies in the Park'

The Lompoc Recreation Division will host a free screening of the 2018 film “Bumblebee” beginning at dusk, around 8 p.m., Saturday, July 13, at Ryon Park, 800 W. Ocean Ave.

The event is the second of three installments planned for this summer’s "Movies in the Park" series. Attendees are encouraged to bring low-back chairs, blankets, snacks, or even dinner to the family-friendly screening. Some snacks will be available for purchase. Smoking, alcohol and pets will not be permitted.

Landmark Church to host Vacation Bible School

The Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, 708 North Third St., will host a Vacation Bible School from Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19.

The school is open to children in preschool through eighth grade. The classes will meet from 6 to 8:30 p.m. each day. The theme is "Farm Fresh Faith," and the classes will explore the story of Joseph and his coat of many colors.

Free lecture to focus on long-term senior care

Dallas Leigh Atkins, a Santa Barbara-based elder care attorney, will lead a free lecture on long-term senior care from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the Ocean’s Seven Café inside Lompoc Valley Medical Center, 1515 E. Ocean Ave.

Atkins, a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, is slated to speak about the differences in coverage between Medicare (for short-term rehab care) and Medi-Cal (long-term care). Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn strategies for legal options and how to stay away from financial pitfalls, get educated about maintaining autonomy and dignity, and plan for all stages of life. Atkins has practiced law since 1977 and is also a marriage and family therapist.

The lecture is presented by the Community Education Committee of the Lompoc Hospital District Foundation.

Friends of Library to hold summer book sale

The Friends of the Lompoc Library System will hold its annual summer book sale on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20, with a special members-only "preview sale" from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 18, at the Lompoc Public Library’s Grossman Gallery, 501 E. North Ave.

The sale will be open to everyone from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 19 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 20. The sale will include hardback and paperback books, CDs, videos, DVDs, audiobooks, and the Friends' "Treasure Table." Attendees will also be able to join the Friends of the Library during the sale and/or pay their 2019 dues.

Legion to host 'Christmas in July' bazaar

The Sons of the American Legion Vandenberg Squadron 125 will host a "Christmas in July" bazaar from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at the Lompoc Veterans Memorial Building, 100 E. Locust Ave.

Spots are still available for vendors and craft-makers who would like to operate a display. The cost is $25 per space.

Iris Society to hold annual Rhizome Sale

The Lompoc Valley Iris Society will hold its annual Iris Rhizome Sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 27, in the parking lot at CoastHills Credit Union, 1320 North H St.

The sale will include high-quality iris of recent introduction, grown in Iris Society members' gardens, according to the organization. In addition to the traditional rhizomes, the sale will also include iris plants (growing in one- and two-gallon cans), all with photos.
