Registration due Friday for Chamber Awards Banquet
Registration is open through Friday, Aug. 16, for the Lompoc Valley Chamber of Commerce’s 2019 Awards Banquet, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 21, at the Dick DeWees Community and Senior Center, 1120 W. Ocean Ave.
The annual banquet is dedicated to celebrating the businesses, community, and individuals that support and inspire the Lompoc Valley, according to the Chamber. At the event, Chamber staff and volunteers will present this year’s Lompoc Valley Man and Woman of the Year awards, as well as the Chamber Volunteer of the Year, and the Small Business Excellence awards.
The cost to attend the luncheon is $55 per person. That fee includes a full-course meal that will be catered by American Host Restaurant. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for check-in and cocktail hour, and the program is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Skateboard Competition slated for Saturday
The community is invited to gear up for the Lompoc Recreation Division’s annual Skateboard Competition, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Lompoc Skate Park, 305 W. College Ave.
The event is open to all skaters ages 7 and older, and is co-sponsored by Surf Connection. Lompoc Foursquare Church will provide refreshments. Check-in starts at 10 a.m. and the contest will begin at 11 a.m. The cost is $5 per event. Prizes will be awarded in each category and age group. Participants must comply with the rules and regulations of the skate park, and wear appropriate safety equipment.
Preregistration is encouraged, but on-site registration will be accepted. Participants can preregister at the Anderson Recreation Center, 125 W. Walnut Ave. Registration forms can also be accessed online at www.cityoflompoc.com/recreation.
LVMC surgeon to give lecture on spine surgery
Lompoc Valley Medical Center orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard Rooney will speak about "Demystifying Spine Surgery" during a free presentation from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21.
The Lompoc Hospital District Foundation lecture will be held at the medical center's Ocean's Seven Cafe, 1515 E. Ocean Ave.
Rooney, a fellowship-trained surgeon who practices at Lompoc Health-North H Center, will review spine conditions that may prompt patients to seek either nonsurgical or surgical care options. He also will discuss what patients may expect from surgery if that becomes a treatment option.
Rooney will answer questions about spine surgery, as well as general orthopedic concerns.
Dog rescue teams with pizzeria for fundraiser
Shadow’s Fund Dog Rescue has teamed with Wild West Pizza and Grill, 1137 North H St., for a fundraiser and bake sale from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22.
Fifty percent of the proceeds from all regular-priced pizza purchases during the fundraiser hours will be donated to Shadow’s Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to the rescue and rehoming of senior dogs, dogs labeled as pit bulls, and dogs with a treatable injury or illness. Customers, whether dine-in or carry-out, must mention Shadow's Fund to have their purchase included in the fundraiser.
Customers are also invited to pick up dessert as part of a bake sale that will benefit the rescue from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Wild West Pizza and Grill.

American Veterans United hosting family barbecue
American Veterans United Inc. will host its Family BBQ from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Ryon Park, 800 W. Ocean Ave.
Cost is $10 for tri-tip, beans, bread, salad, water or soft drink. World War II and Korean War veterans and their spouses eat free. The event will include raffle prizes, free hots dogs for kids and entertainment.
