Mayor to host City Council challengers for 'Coffee with Bob'
Lompoc Mayor Bob Lingl will be joined by Robert Cuthbert and Shirley Sherman, the two challengers in this year's city council races, at his next "Coffee with Bob" gathering, scheduled for 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at South Side Coffee Co., 105 South H St.
The public is invited to attend the free meeting, at which community members can meet Lingl and the candidates and let them know how they feel about things going on in Lompoc. Cuthbert is running against incumbent Dirk Starbuck for the council's District 3 seat, while Sherman is challenging Victor Vega for the District 2 seat.
"Come join Bob and meet these two exciting and energetic candidates," Lingl said. "This is your city, get involved and make your vote count this November."
Electric Car Show to be held in Solvang
As part of the National Drive Electric Week campaign, an Electric Car Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Parking Lot 1 in Solvang's Centennial Plaza, 470 Alisal Road.
The event is being put on by the Los Padres chapter of the Sierra Club and the Community Environmental Council. Attendees will be able to meet local electric vehicle owners and dealers, and learn more about tax and DMV benefits that are available to electric vehicle owners.
Registration open for Catholic Women's Retreat
All area women are invited to a Catholic Women's Retreat, scheduled for Oct. 19 to 21 at the Sacred Heart Retreat House in the city of Alhambra.
The retreat is being hosted by the Carmelite Sisters. It will be led by a priest. A chartered bus will be available for transport to and from Santa Barbara and other Central Coast cities.

Dog food drive to benefit Shadow's Fund rescue
Shadow's Fund, a local animal rescue, has partnered with Grocery Outlet, 316 E. Ocean Ave., for an ongoing dog food drive to benefit the Shadow's Fund shelter.
A collection box has been set up at the store and shoppers are encouraged to donate any size of Evo and/or California Natural brand of dog foods. A representative of Shadow's Fund said the shelter relies entirely on community support to operate.Â

Spaces available for Elks Lodge Craft Bazaar
The Lompoc Elks Lodge is accepting sign-ups for spaces at its annual Craft Bazaar, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the lodge, 905 E. Ocean Ave.
At the event, attendees will be able to shop and enjoy a picnic on the lodge’s back patio. There will be tri-tip sandwiches, hot dogs, drinks and baked goods for sale. Among the non-food items expected to be on sale are creations of glass, wood art, jewelry, blankets, aprons and other items that have been sewn, knitted and/or crocheted.Â
The cost to rent a space starts at $20.
