LUSD to host Dia de los Muertos Celebration

Lompoc Unified School District will host a Día de los Muertos Celebration and Catrina contest from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at El Camino Community Center, 320 North J Street.

The event will include community altars, face painting, the Catrina contest, arts and crafts and entertainment by Ballet Folklorico. No Halloween costumes or zombies are allowed.

The event is being sponsored by the LUSD Pupil Support Services Department, El Sabor de Mexico Ballet Folklorico and the Lompoc High School Cultural Lifestyle Club.

Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner slated for Friday

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 125 will hold its annual Pre-Thanksgiving Dinner beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at the Lompoc Veterans Memorial Building, 100 E. Locust Ave.

Meals will include turkey with all the trimmings, desserts and refreshments. The cost is a $10 donation. Proceeds will be used to support local veterans and their families during the holiday season and throughout the year, according to organizers.

Clubs to host Emergency Preparedness event

The Lompoc Valley Democratic Club and the Lompoc Valley Republican Women Federated are co-sponsoring an Emergency Preparedness event scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Monday in the Grossman Gallery at the Lompoc Public Library, 501 E. North Ave.

The program will be presented by the Lompoc Fire Department. Everyone is invited to attend and learn how best to prepare for earthquake, fire and flood disasters. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and light refreshments will be served.

The library closes its doors at 7, so anyone arriving later will need to use one of the doors that leads directly into the Grossman Gallery.

Buddhist Center to offer meditation workshop

The Mahakankala Buddhist Center North will offer a meditation workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 18 at 701 E. North Ave., Suite F (upstairs).

Keli Vaughan, resident instructor, will teach “The Stages of the Path to Enlightenment.” In this workshop, Vaughan will identify how to begin an authentic Buddhist meditation practice by using methods that deepen one’s familiarity with the peace that arises from holding special attitudes for longer periods of time. No meditation experience is necessary and everyone is welcome. A donation of $20 per person or $30 for two is suggested.

Vendors sought for Holiday Bazaar 

The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 125 is seeking vendors to participate in this year’s Holiday Bazaar on Nov. 18.

Interfaith Alliance to hold Thanksgiving Celebration

The Lompoc Interfaith Alliance invites the community to attend its annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Celebration, beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 in the Sanctuary at the First United Methodist Church of Lompoc, 925 North F St.

All are welcome to attend the celebration of gratitude and harmony. Participants from all the faith communities in Lompoc will offer musical and spoken inspiration. There will be a reception following the service.
