Swim meet to benefit Toys for Tots drive
Lompoc Tsunami Aquatics will host its inaugural Toys-For-Tots Swim Meet, which will benefit the Lompoc Valley Toys for Tots campaign, from Thursday, Dec. 5, through Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Lompoc Aquatic Center, 207 W. College Ave.
The event, which will run all day each of the three days, will be free to attend. All attendees who donate an unwrapped toy valued between $10 to $15 will receive a custom Toys for Tots swim cap. All toys donated will stay in the Lompoc Valley.
Competing in the meet will be teams from Tulare, Clovis, Tehachapi, Lancaster, Malibu and several more from Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. A total of 338 swimmers are registered to compete, which would make the meet the largest ever to be hosted at the Lompoc Aquatic Center, according to organizers.
The meet is designated as a last chance for winter age group championships. Lompoc Tsunami Aquatics currently has six qualified athletes who will travel to Castaic to compete from Dec. 13 to Dec. 15.

AAUW bake sale fundraiser slated for Friday, weather permitting
The Lompoc-Vandenberg Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will hold a holiday bake sale fundraiser from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, on the sidewalk in front of 104 South H St. If rain leads to a postponement of the Lompoc Valley Children's Christmas Season Parade, however, the sale will be moved to Friday, Dec. 13, at the same time/location.
The bake sale is a fundraiser for the branch’s Speech Trek program. The Speech Trek competition is scheduled for Jan. 31 at Lompoc City Hall and is open at no cost to high school-aged students in Lompoc, Santa Ynez, Buellton and Solvang. The topic for the 2020 Speech Trek contest is: “Are men and women truly equal today, or are the suffragettes of 1920 still suffering in 2020?”
Applications for the contest are available from AAUW Speech Trek coordinator Pam Buchanan, who can be reached at email@example.com. Speeches will be judged by a diverse panel of community professionals, and the top three will be awarded $250, $150 and $100, respectively.
