AAUW program to focus on local water supply

The Lompoc-Vandenberg branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will host a free program titled “Water is Life” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, in the Grossman Gallery at the Lompoc Public Library, 501 E. North Ave.

The event, held in conjunction with April being recognized as Earth Month, will focus on local water supplies, conservation measures, water quality and local challenges. The scheduled presenters include Joe Barget, the general manager of the Vandenberg Village Community Services District; Loch Dreizler, the general manager of the Mission Hills Community Services District; and Shaun Ryan, the acting superintendent of the city of Lompoc water division.

The program, which is open to the public, will follow the AAUW’s general meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

CHS Aquarium to host 'Earth Day' open house

The Cabrillo High School Aquarium will host an Earth Day-themed open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, at the on-campus facility.

The free event, which is open to the community, will feature the aquarium's interactive displays, and visitors of all ages will be able to learn about ways that humans can make Earth a better place to live. Additionally, registration information will be available for the aquarium’s upcoming Summer Camp, which will be held June 10 through 14.

The aquarium is located on the Cabrillo High campus, 4350 Constellation Road.

Community invited to Veterans United meeting

American Veterans United, a nonprofit that advocates for active-duty service members, veterans and their families, is inviting the community to attend its monthly general meeting, scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27, at the American Legion Post 211, 636 North H St.

Veterans seeking help with benefits and claims are encouraged to attend. There will also be merchandise for sale and and a raffle afterward. The American Veterans United meetings are held on the fourth Saturday of each month.

Registration open for 'Happy Happening' event

Registration is open for the Lompoc Elks Lodge's annual “Happy Happening” event, scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at River Park.

All individuals with special needs and their caretakers are invited to register for the event, which is billed as a day of fishing, fun, food and games designed to support the local special needs community. The Lompoc Elks Lodge will provide the fishing equipment and bait.

Registration forms can be picked up at the Lompoc Elks Lodge, the Anderson Recreation Center and The Box Shop, among other locations.

New textbooks to be available for preview

Several new textbooks that are being recommended for adoption in Lompoc Unified School District will be available for preview from Monday, April 29, through Monday, May 13, at the Lompoc Public Library, 501 E. North Ave.

The books include "Illustrative Math" (for sixth grade); "California World History" (seventh grade); "California American History" (eighth grade); and "World History," "US History," "Economics," "Sociology," "Psychology" and "Magruders Government," all for high school courses.

Adoption of the textbooks will be on the agenda of the May 14 LUSD Board of Education meeting, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Education Center Board Room, 1301 North A St.
