Grease fire smokes out bar but causes little damage
Shortly before 1:55 p.m. Thursday, a grease fire broke out in Johnny’s Bar and Grill, 321 W. Ocean Ave.
Two fire engines responded to the scene of the bar, where a stove had caught fire.
“It just kicked up a lot of smoke,” Battalion Chief Stan Hart said at the scene.
Flames were put out quickly, with little property damage beyond the stove itself, estimated around $5,000 Hart said.
Lompoc library closed today to complete remodeling
The Lompoc Public Library will be closed today for completion of a remodeling project. The library will reopen at noon on Saturday.
Toy drive, reception to honor Mikey Terrones
The Terrones family will hold the third annual holiday toy drive in memory of Mikey Terrones, collecting toys for the Lompoc chapter of the Toys for Tots and local women’s shelters to distribute to children in need.
A special reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Terrones home, 2008 Conception Drive, in the Briar Creek Homes. The public is invited to bring an unwrapped toy to the reception and stay for appetizers.

Southside to host Open Mic Night
Southside Coffee Company, 105 South H St., will host Open Mic Night at 8 tonight. Musicians, poets and artists are welcome to come perform.

Youth center to hold fundraiser
The Lompoc Valley Community Youth Center will host a fundraiser barbecue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 537 North K St. Chicken, tri-tip and pork rib dinners will be offered for $7 each. All proceeds will benefit youth programs at the center.

Block party to be held Dec. 18
New Life Christian Center will hold its annual “Happy Birthday Jesus” block party from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at 816 North C St.
Featured at the party will be jump houses, rock wall, face painting, crafts, cake walk, games and more. The event is free and open to the public. The street will be blocked off during this time.

Church offers free concert
Calvary Baptist Church will host “Music of the Manger,” a free annual Christmas concert, at 7 p.m. Sunday at 3355 Constellation Road in Vandenberg Village.
The concert will feature Christmas classics and new songs, by the Calvary Choir with vocal ensembles, soloists and instrumentals. The event is open to the public.

Hapgood plan to be reviewed
The School Safety Plan for Arthur Hapgood Elementary School, 324 South A St., will be reviewed at the next School Site Council meeting at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday in Room 4. The public is invited. A copy of the plan will be available in the school office prior to the meeting.
Adult Ed to offer Photoshop class
Lompoc Unified Adult Education will offer an Adobe Photoshop Basics class from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 5 and concluding Jan. 26, in Room 17, at 320 North J St. The class will teach the basics of the software through practical, step-by-step exercises. The fee is $30.
