Both directions of Highway 101 will remain closed from the junction of State Route 126 in Ventura County to Milpas Street in Santa Barbara until Monday afternoon, Jan. 15, due to mudslides, Caltrans announced this morning.
Motorists are advised to use Interstate 5 as an alternate route.
Water, mud and debris continue to move, hampering Caltrans' progress in clearing Hwy. 101, according to the release. The creeks and exit paths for water are clogged due to downstream blockages and much of the water is not dissipating and receding as hoped. Additionally, the Hwy. 101 area remains a disaster rescue and recovery zone.
“We are working with other agencies to remove blockages and restore US Highway 101. We are also coordinating with agencies to aid in rescues and provide a pathway through,” said Sara von Schwind, Caltrans District 5 Deputy District Director of Maintenance and Operations.
