DUI crackdown to begin Friday
A countywide, holiday-season crackdown on drunken driving is set to begin Friday, law enforcement officials announced.
Known as Avoid the 12, the joint campaign — involving police, California Highway Patrol officers and sheriff’s deputies — is focused on impaired drivers.
Sobriety checkpoints are scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Lompoc and Friday in Santa Maria, organizers said.
Checkpoints are also scheduled for Dec. 23 in Santa Maria and on New Year’s Eve in Santa Barbara.

Man jumps to his death from bridge

A man jumped off the Cold Spring Canyon Bridge to his death Sunday, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
At about 3:20 p.m., county firefighters responded to a report of an adult male who had leaped off the bridge on Highway 154 in the Santa Ynez Valley, said county fire Capt. Vince Agapito
U.S. Forest Service firefighters found the body below the bridge, he said.
Substance washes up in dunes estuary
Recent heavy rains are the source of organic material washed up on shore near the Santa Maria River Estuary Monday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Personnel from the California Department of Fish and Game and the Coast Guard were called out to the estuary, in the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes area, on a report of a black substance in the water, the Coast Guard said
