Lompoc community members joined with local military leaders and veterans on Monday to remember and pay tribute to fallen U.S. service members.

The Memorial Day ceremony was organized by American Legion Post 211 and held at Lompoc’s Evergreen Cemetery. It was one of several events around the Central Coast — and nation — that was held to commemorate the holiday.

Brig. Gen. Matthew Davidson, who is stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base, was the keynote speaker for the Lompoc gathering. The event also included the VAFB honor guard, live music performances by trumpeter Gene Myers and comments from Lompoc Mayor Jenelle Osborne.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the final Monday of May for remembering and honoring the military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces.
