A free public workshop titled, “Straw Bale Gardening,” will be presented by the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Master Gardeners from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Lompoc’s Stone Pine Hall, 200 South H St.

Attendees will be able to learn all about gardening with straw bales, including selecting, preparing and conditioning straw bales; planting seed and seedlings in them; where and how to place the bales; and what to do with the bales at the end of the season. Straw bale gardening opens possibilities for people with limited space, limited options, or limited ability to bend over.

The speakers will include Trudy Adair-Verbais, a lifelong gardener, and Janet Rogers, a retired educator and longtime home gardener.
