But did many expect him to still be playing ball 10 years later? Who saw that potential? Well, De La Guerra himself certainly did. Now 28, the former Panther is in fact playing ball and he's getting paid for it.
Full practices aimed at preparing for a season were scheduled to begin this month. For the sport of football, for instance, practices were slated to start on Monday, Dec. 7 for CIF Central Section schools, with the high school season kicking off on Jan. 7. Those dates are no longer feasible. One football coach told the Times that practices could start in mid-January with the season kicking off in February.
Back in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, Tell helped lead a major turnaround at the school. In Tell's freshman season at PVHS, the Panthers went 2-10 in league. By her junior season, the Panthers were 10-2. By her senior season, the Panthers were 11-1 in league and crowned league champions.
Mansera surpassed 1,800 yards rushing and scored 21 times on the ground. He topped 200 yards in a single game five times that year. He did this against some pretty stiff competition, as the Panthers played Nipomo, Atascadero, St. Joseph, Lompoc, Righetti and Palmdale that year.
St. Joseph High started last week. Lompoc and Cabrillo are planning to start next week, on Sept. 8. Santa Ynez has set Sept. 14 as its date while the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District announced Tuesday that it will resume on Sept. 21.
