The Lompoc Babe Ruth trophy now goes by a new name: The Noah Scott Championship Trophy.
The name was unveiled before the Sunday title game between the 45’s and V&J Rock Transport. The title of the trophy honored the Lompoc Valley teenager and former Babe Ruth player who went on to inspire the community with his fight against leukemia. Scott died from the disease June 30, 2017, at the age of 15.
League president John Hernandez first presented the trophy to Noah’s parents, Chuck and Kristin Scott, inside the meeting room at George Meyer Field on the day before the championship game -- which he illustrated as an emotional scene.
“They teared up. We all did,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez added that the new trophy came via a generous donation and push by Brandon Brickey, who is one of the coaches for the title winner of the 2018 trophy, The 45’s, who are sponsored by 45 Degrees Plumbing in Lompoc.
“What happened was the board was looking for a way to honor Noah’s memory. Brickey donated and volunteered to get a new trophy,” Hernandez said. “Noah played here a couple of years. He was such an inspiration.”
The 45’s, coached by Leonard Napier with Brickey serving as an assistant, finished the LBR season at 13-2-2 and clinched the No. 1 seed in the double elimination tournament. The 45’s went on to go 3-0 in the tournament and ended the Lompoc Babe Ruth season with a 9-1 win over V&J Trucking.
Chuck Scott, who works as a Lompoc Police Department officer, called the new trophy an awesome surprise for his family.
“I was told of the trophy on Saturday and it was a tearful moment for my wife, Kristin, and I,” Scott said. “I’m so excited that the trophy is named after Noah. He loved baseball and was a student of the game.”
The LPD officer is equally excited knowing that future Lompoc Babe Ruth champions will call themselves the winner of the Noah Scott Championship Trophy.
“Knowing that each year the winning team will hear Noah’s name when awarded the trophy is so special,” Scott said. “This community has gone above the call in honoring our son. We are blessed to be a part of such an amazing group of people.”
The Babe Ruth All-Star tournament locations for the Lompoc teams were also announced by Hernandez on Monday -- and Lompoc will be the host of the 14-year-old tournament.
The Lompoc 13’s All-Star team will head to Morrison Field in Orcutt beginning on June 27. The 14’s will take on their challengers at George Meyer Field in Lompoc starting on June 25. The 15-year-olds will head to Santa Maria’s Elks Field for tournament play on June 28.
